Funding expands access to digital literacy programs, supporting educational opportunities and workforce readiness

Comcast announced it has awarded a $75,000 grant to The Literacy Alliance, a Fort Wayne-based community organization dedicated to improving literacy for children and adults through free programs and services.

The grant will strengthen The Literacy Alliance’s efforts to deliver computer and Internet skills training through its Project Graduate and Project Connect programs. Nearly 500 students will gain access to essential digital literacy training across both programs.

Project Graduate helps adult learners prepare for the high school equivalency (HSE) exam, while Project Connect provides English language instruction to adults whose primary language is not English. In addition to digital skills, students receive training in math, reading, writing, science, and social studies, as well as workforce readiness, soft skills, and financial literacy.

“Digital literacy is no longer optional—it’s essential for education, employment, and everyday life,” said Melinda Haines, CEO of The Literacy Alliance. “Comcast’s continued support allows us to expand these critical programs, giving more students the tools they need to succeed in school, work, and beyond.”

The grant announced today is in addition to two grants announced earlier this year totaling $140,000 to enhance digital skills training and support the launch of their mobile testing center. These investments helped students build competencies in communication, critical thinking, problem-solving, job acquisition, and transferable soft skills such as time management, teamwork, and adaptability.

“Our partnership with The Literacy Alliance reflects Comcast’s commitment to creating opportunities for every member of the community,” said Joni Hart, Vice President of Government and Community Affairs for Comcast Indiana. “By supporting programs that teach digital skills, we’re helping Fort Wayne residents unlock new possibilities for education and economic mobility.”

This grant is a part of Project UP, Comcast’s $1 billion commitment to expand internet access, deliver digital skills training, and drive economic mobility.
