Hey, Indiana Gamers and Binge Watchers: 1 Gig is Here

Gamers around computer screens

Fort Wayne’s James Fislar, a longtime Comcast customer, knows that nothing fuels instant frustration faster than slow internet speeds. As an avid computer gamer with two sons, his family relies on plenty of bandwidth to support streaming on multiple devices. While his 8-year-old son is watching an endless loop of YouTube videos, his 12-year-old son may be streaming movies. Meanwhile, James live-streams computer gameplay with others online, which, according to him, takes “an enormous amount of bandwidth.”

In this environment, it’s not uncommon to suffer less-than-ideal picture quality and buffering. This is why Comcast is bringing 1-gig service to customers across Indiana.

Indiana residents can now sign up for XFINITY Gigabit, a trial service available to virtually all of our Indiana coverage area, from Indianapolis and the surrounding counties, to the campuses in Bloomington and South Bend, to smaller, but growing, towns like City of Rising Sun and Logansport.

“We definitely have a need for 1-gig speeds in my household,” James says. “XFINITY Gigabit opens the door for everybody to do whatever they want, and have the video quality and experience they want.”

One gig is also more than enough for James to run FortCON – an annual, 300-person video gaming conference he hosts in Fort Wayne. Last year, attendees were asked to limit social media activity to preserve bandwidth for gameplay. This year, however, 1 gig will give gamers four times the bandwidth, so they won’t have to sacrifice social media sharing.

“In the gaming world, internet speeds are huge,” he says. “For a lot of games, you’re competing as a team to complete an objective. That means you’re talking to your teammates, which requires us to have voice servers running in the background. We couldn’t do that before because of limited bandwidth.”

What can you do with a Gigabit? Turns out, a lot.

“With 1 gig of downloading speed, the average Indiana household will have more than enough capability to download, upload and stream their favorite music, movies and TV shows,” said Mike Wilson, public relations director for Comcast in Indiana. “Smaller files, like an MP3 album or TV episode, will only take a few seconds to download. Larger files, like a 5-gig, HD-quality movie, will take about 40 seconds. Even a 15-gig Blu-ray-quality movie would take only two minutes, compared to the usual download time of an hour.”

Because XFINITY Gigabit uses your existing XFINITY infrastructure, you can get these lightning-quick speeds without having to install new cables. Once signed up for the trial, you will be scheduled for a tech visit. That tech will install everything you need for your super-fast internet experience to begin.

Indiana is only the fifth state in the nation to receive XFINITY Gigabit, following 2016 rollouts in Georgia, Illinois, Michigan and Tennessee.
